Why Personal Growth Isn’t Working: The Trap No One Talks About

[15 MIN LISTEN]

A few years ago, my nightstand looked like a personal growth bookstore.

Books on mindset, habits, healing, spirituality—stacked everywhere. I was constantly reading, highlighting, learning.

And yet… my inner world still felt overwhelming.

If you’ve ever wondered why personal growth isn’t working, even when you’re doing everything “right,” you’re not alone.

The Personal Growth Trap No One Talks About

There’s something that happens to a lot of people on this journey.

At first, learning feels exciting. You’re discovering new ideas about self-love, emotional health, nervous system regulation. It feels like everything is opening up.

But eventually…

It starts to feel like too much.

More information. More advice. More things to “fix.”

And suddenly, personal growth starts to feel like just another thing you’re failing at.

Why Self-Help Isn’t Working (For So Many Women)

Here’s the truth:

You can consume an enormous amount of information without ever integrating it.

You can understand something intellectually without actually living it.

Reading about boundaries doesn’t mean you feel confident setting them.

Learning about nervous system regulation doesn’t mean your body knows how to respond in real time.

Hearing about self-love doesn’t automatically change how you speak to yourself.

That’s the gap.

The Shift That Changes Everything

The shift for me was simple, but powerful.

Instead of asking:

“What else do I need to learn?”

I started asking:

“How can I actually practice what I already know?”

That’s when everything changed.

How to Apply Personal Growth in Real Life

Real transformation doesn’t come from one big breakthrough.

It comes from small, repeated choices:

• pausing instead of reacting

• noticing when you’re overwhelmed

• choosing compassion instead of criticism

These moments might seem small, but they’re where real change happens.

You Don’t Need More Information

If personal growth has been feeling overwhelming, here’s what I want you to hear:

You probably don’t need more information.

You might just need more space to practice.

Where This Work Becomes Real

This realization is a big part of why I created Self-Love Studio™.

Because it’s one thing to learn these concepts and another to actually live them.

This podcast is where we talk about the work.

Self-Love Studio™ is where you practice it.

Welcome to The Life with Liz Podcast, the place to be if you wanna go from invisible to vibrant in your life and embrace the power you didn't know you had inside of you. Now without further ado, let's dive right into this episode.

Okay, so a few years ago, my nightstand looked like a self-help personal growth bookstore.

Raise your hand if you can relate.

I mean, there were stacks of books.

Everywhere.

Mindset books. Spiritual books. Business books. Books about habits, happiness, healing, spirituality, angels, manifestation.

I was reading constantly.

Highlighting passages, taking notes, trying to absorb every single lesson, word, and yet somehow, despite all of this research and trying to plan, my life, my inner world still felt so overwhelming.

I remember sitting in bed one night thinking something that felt almost rebellious at the time.

Why do all these books say a version of the same thing, but none of them actually tell you how to live it?

To embody it, to embrace it.

They all said things like, take a deep breath, and meditate at 5am, and trust yourself, and say these affirmations, and listen.

Those things absolutely matter.

I do them now, they work for me because I’ve learned to embody it, but when you’re in the middle of real life, when you’re overwhelmed, tired, juggling responsibilities, those non-stop instructions and that repetition in those books can start to feel really frustrating, because the real question then becomes, how do I actually do this?

How do I realistically integrate this into my life and create positive change?

That’s what I wanted to know.

And this is something I see happen to a lot of people on the personal growth journey, and in the spiritual space.

At first, learning feels exciting. Your Kindle library is full, your TBR is full, you’re discovering new ideas about awareness, emotional health, nervous system regulation, self-love.

It feels like doors are opening.

It feels like a giant ray of hope.

But eventually, something strange can happen.

Instead of feeling clearer, you start to feel a bit more overwhelmed.

More information, more concepts, more advice, and suddenly personal growth starts to feel like just another thing you’re failing at.

Then you drop it, you give up, and you’re right back where you started.

The truth is, there’s a trap in this world, the personal growth, personal development, self-help world, that almost nobody talks about, and it’s this.

You can consume an enormous amount of information and really incredible wisdom from incredible resources without ever integrating it.

And I was there.

Man, I was there.

You can understand something intellectually from these resources, but that’s not the same as living it, as embodying it in your everyday life.

So, reading about boundaries, for example, doesn’t mean you suddenly feel comfortable setting them.

Listening to a podcast about nervous system regulation doesn’t mean your body instantly knows how to calm down during stress.

Learning about self-love and self-trust doesn’t automatically change the way you speak to yourself.

Integration takes guts. It takes something different.

It takes practice.

Practice.

The shift for me happened when I stopped asking myself, what else do I need to learn? What else is there? I haven’t found it yet. What else? What else? What else? More, more, more.

And I started asking instead, how can I actually pause and practice what I already know, what is already lighting me up?

And that question changed everything, because when you shift from learning mode to practice mode, and embodiment mode, personal growth becomes much simpler and a lot more freakin’ fun, you guys.

Because you’re learning concepts, you’re living exercises that work for you.

Maybe that means practicing breathing when you feel overwhelmed.

Maybe it means noticing when you’re pushing yourself past exhaustion.

Maybe it means pausing before reacting during a difficult moment.

Instead of constantly searching for those new ideas, you’re beginning to work with the ones that already resonate, and possibly adapting them so they fit your lifestyle.

And those moments might seem small, it might feel like you’re not making much of a change just by waking up 5 minutes earlier, and doing a 5-minute meditation, or buying a crystal, or whatever your jive is.

That might seem small and insignificant, but my friend, those are the most powerful moments, because that’s where real change actually happens.

Personal growth rarely transforms your life through one massive breakthrough.

We can all have our dark night of the soul, which is a learning experience in and of itself, as you know, but there’s not just one big aha moment, or light bulb moment.

Personal growth and positive transformation and all of that clarity and that confidence comes from nonstop lightbulb moments that you continue following.

It changes your life through small choices, repeated over time.

So, choosing to slow down, choosing to listen to yourself, choosing compassion instead of criticism.

And over time, those choices that you decide to make reshape the way you experience your life.

So, as someone who was reading all the books on the nightstand, in the Kindle library for years, and getting so annoyed that they all said the same thing, I noticed.

I became in my awareness, and I chose to reshape the way I was experiencing what I was learning.

And this realization is actually a big part of why I created the Self Love Studio.

And on this podcast, we talk about nervous system regulation, self-trust, reconnecting with yourself, and creating a life that feels aligned.

We go deep, we have fun.

But Self-Love Studio is where we actually practice those things, not as these wild, abstract ideas, but as real-life tools that help you begin to integrate the work into your everyday life.

Because transformation rarely happens from one insight, it happens through repetition, reflection, and practice.

And yeah, you know what? That might feel boring over time, but you have decades worth of old conditioning in you that’s telling you to live your life one way, that it’s comfortable to live your life one way, so when you start to make those little changes, yeah, you’re gonna get some friggin’ pushback from your ego and your subconscious.

Obviously, of course, it’s gonna feel weird, it’s gonna feel hard at times, but it’s also gonna feel really invigorating.

So, that’s how you know that you’re making a positive change, that you’re learning to embody what you’re learning and what interests you.

And you don’t have to know everything under the sun in the self-help and personal growth spaces to live a better life, to live happier or healthier.

So, if personal growth has ever felt overwhelming to you, I want you to hear this so clearly.

You probably don’t need more information.

You might just need more space to practice.

A space to just slow down.

To clearly reconnect with yourself.

With clarity and a space to live what you already know, but might not have had the opportunity to just be with.

So, I really wanted to create this episode for you today to shine some light on this topic, because, my friends, I have been there.

The self-help world is like a big, giant spider web, and it loves to convince you that you’re broken, and that you need fixing, and that there’s only one right way to do something, because this person has a million followers, or this person came from that much money, so they’re automatically a guru, and we must listen to them.

But my friends, what I’m getting at here is that the only voice that truly matters is the one inside of you.

And what your intuition is guiding you toward.

And that change, the voice of your intuition, is only going to get clearer and louder the more that you choose to listen to it, and you can hear that calling when you begin to embody healthy mindset practices, when you listen to yourself.

You listen deeply, deeply, deeply to the calling of your soul, your body, your energy, your emotions, and you use that as a guide to propel yourself forward.

And, like I said, those can be small moments, but they are always the most powerful.

So I hope this episode resonated with you today.
